Thing 15:Digg

June 25, 2009

At first glance this looks like a Yahoo quick bite that appears on log in.  Obviously someone other than the Yahoo staff gets to decide what is newsworthy and what is not.  Interesting concept.  Apparently some of the info challenges our gullibility level and presumably is meant to be a joke.  Since news items are involved it seems a step above the sites that specialize in “what are you eating at present”..

Thing 14:Delicious

Especially enjoyed the concept that there is a sharing of useful and fun information in an organized fashion.  It would obviously depend upon those in the loop how valuable the finds are and how well the categories are labeled.  This  and Ning are so far the favorite Things.

Seemed directed at a specific level of users, so I found it an overload of terminology and imformation without time or direction to explore the concept.  I would feel impertinent and inadequate to comment on the usage in a library situation without exploring it in more depth.
Seems a rather curt comment so I went back and looked at the Wikipedia article and tried using tagging and it made much more sense. I think it would require a good deal of training for it to be used successfully in a whole library setting, it’s free form, which is fine but wonder if there would not need to be parameters to keep a whole staff on target rather than sliding into chaos. Great idea.

Thing 11:about IM

June 25, 2009

IM was amazing, I had only known a few of the abbreviations and printed out 18 pages!, really helpful and would be great to use when I learn more of them.
Now several weeks later I have been talking with friends who use IM all the time and wouldn’t be without it. Most people here use Google and Yahoo if they are adults and the teens MySpace. It has been suggested that we use it for the library staff, but that has not been implemented yet.
